PURPOSE:To obtain the titled high-purity powder having uniform particle size distribution and extreme fineness, by dispersing powder carbon into a specific metallic alkoxide, hydrolyzing it to give precipitate and heating the precipitate in a gas atmosphere of N2, NH3, etc. CONSTITUTION:An alkoxide shown by the formula (M is Ti, Zr, or Hf of group 4a of periodic table, V, Nb, or Ta of group 5a, or Cr, Mo, or W of group 6a; R is alkoxyl; x is integer determined by M) is optionally dissolved in an organic solvent. Powder carbon (e.g., graphite powder) having 100-1,000Angstrom average particle diameter is immersed in an alcohol (solution in hexane) and subjected to surface treatment to give powder carbon having a hydrophilic group on the surface, which is dispersed into the solution and hydrolyzed at 50-90 deg.C. The formed precipitate is washed, dried, heated in an atmosphere of one or more gases of N2, NH3, and hydrazine at 1,000-1,600 deg.C and reduced and nitrogenized to give the titled powder which consists of (carbon) nitride of group 4a, 5a, or 6a of periodic table and has <=0.5mu particle diameter.
