Apparatus for roasting granular materials such as coffee beans in the fluidised state. The aim is to achieve an increased quality of the product by equal treatment of all particles with short process times with reduced expenditure for manufacturing the apparatus. The apparatus is intended in this case to have a small specific space requirement and low overall height. In the apparatus according to the invention a rotatable gas distributor plate is arranged above a gas distribution chamber and beneath a fluidised-bed chamber. The rapid and complete emptying of the fluidised-bed chamber is achieved through a laterally arranged, curved emptying flap, as a result of the inclination of the gas distributor plate which adopts a horizontal position during the roasting, cooling or drying process. <IMAGE>
