Received signals of m reception converters of a sonar system are sampled consecutively with a multiplexer, digitised and arranged in the sequence of their sampling in time with a clock frequency in order then to form directional characteristics from the sampling values. A solution is indicated for the event that the clock frequency, which is equal to m times the sampling frequency required to reproduce the received signals, is significantly higher than the operating clock frequency of the multiplexer. The multiplexer has as many sampling circuits, which are activated with the operating clock frequency, as the number indicated by the quotient n from the clock frequency and operating clock frequency, and has a polling circuit for the output signals of the sampling circuits which is activated by the clock frequency. The inputs of each sampling circuit are connected to (m)/n reception converters, n reception converters in each case being disposed between adjacent inputs and the first inputs of the n sampling circuits being connected to the first n reception converters. A sampling value display provided with identifiers provides a multiplexer function indicator facility.
