PURPOSE:To efficiently perform the hydrogenation of aldehyde to alcohol, by forming an aldehyde hydrogenating catalyst by supporting iridium and iron or iridium, iron and rhodium by a carrier. CONSTITUTION:Oxides, chlorides, nitrates or carbonates of iridium and iron or iridium, iron and rhodium are dissolved in a solvent such as methanol or tetrahydrofran. A carrier is immersed in the resulting solution and, after the solvent was removed, the impregnated carrier is dried and receives heat treatment if necessary to form an aldehyde hydrogenating catalyst wherein the aforementioned catalytic metal compound was supported by the carrier. The carrier pref. has a specific surface area of about 10-1,000m<2>/g and a pore size of about 10Angstrom or more and, concretely, there are silica, a silica gel and a molecular sieve, etc. The supporting amount of irridium and rhodium is pref. 0.001-0.3wt%. |
