PURPOSE:To improve the oxidation resistance and shelf stability of magnetic metallic powder and to provide superior dispersibility and magnetic characteristics by treating the powder with a specified mercaptan compound. CONSTITUTION:A solvent contg. a dissolved or dispersed mercaptan compound represented by the formula is prepd. In the formula, R is 4-20C alkyl, phenyl which may have a substituent, cyclohexyl, allyl or benzyl, and the substituent is selected among hydroxyl, methyl, carboxyl and halogen. Magnetic iron-base metallic powder is dipped in the solvent and dried to carry out surface treatment.
