PURPOSE:To join a homogeneous catalytic electrode to one side of each of two ion exchange membranes adhered to each other by substituting metallic ions for ions on the unadhered sides, reducing the metallic ions and growing a catalytic metal on the deposited metallic growing nuclei. CONSTITUTION:Two ion exchange membranes 1, 1' are adhered to each other and fitted to a holder 3 through packing 2. An aqueous soln. of [PtCl2(NH3)2]Cl2 is poured into the holder 3 from pouring inlets 4 to form a plating bath 5. The holder 3 is allowed to stand for about 1hr, the aqueous soln. is discharged and the membranes 1, 1' are well washed. The aqueous soln. of sodium hydride is then poured into the holder 3 and the holder 3 is allowed to stand for about 1hr to deposit platinum as plating nuclei on the surfaces of the membranes 1, 1'. After the aqueous soln. of sodium hydride is discharged, the membranes 1, 1' are washed, the aqueous soln. of chloro platinic acid is poured into the holder 3, the aqueous soln. of hydrazine hydro chloride is further poured and the holder 3 is allowed to stand for about 5hr. Platinum is uniformly deposited on the surfaces of the membranes 1, 1' brought into contact with the plating bath 5. |
