PURPOSE:To specify the length of a cable with high accuracy by extending an optical fiber for measurement longitudinally along a high tensile strength body arranged in the center of a cable. CONSTITUTION:The optical fiber 8 for measurement which is stored in a tube 2 made of a material with a high elastic modulus is installed at the center part of the cable where it is not twisted at all even the high strength body 1 positioned in the center part of the cable and correct cable length is obtained even when the cable is bent. Therefore, the optical fiber 8 for measurement is used to take a measurement by a conventional light pulse method, and then the cable length is measured accurately even when the cable is wound around a drum.
