PURPOSE:To discriminate a color with good sensitivity regardless of the presence of gloss, in discriminating the color of matter by detecting reflected light, by using reflected light in a wavelength region wherein a lower limit wavelength is about 440-480nm and an upper limit wavelength is about 900nm. CONSTITUTION:The light emitted from a light source 1 is projected to matter 5 through a lens 2, a half mirror 3 and a lens 4 while a lens 6 converges the reflected light from the matter 5 through the lens 4 and the mirror 3 to project the same to a filter 10. A photodiode 11 converts the reflected light transmitted through the filter 10 to an electric signal which is, in turn, amplified by an amplifier 9 to output a signal 9a. In discriminating the color of the matter by detecting reflected light, reflected light in a wavelength range wherein a lower limit wavelength is about 440-480nm and an upper limit wavelength is about 900nm and, therefore, both of the absolute value of detected light energy and the difference of said light energy by the color of the matter become large as compared with a color discrimination method for detecting light in a visible light region. Therefore, the discrimination of a color is performed with good sensitivity regardless of the presence of gloss.
