PURPOSE:To trace and recognize a quick subject to be traced by providing plural memory circuits storing input picture data from the outside and a processing circuit processing the data stored in said memory circuits. CONSTITUTION:The 1st small capacity memory circuit 2a in the (K+1)th field fetches roughly and stores image pickup data from an input part 1 through which a composite video signal is inputted. On the other hand, the 2nd small capacity memory circuit 2b fetches at a high resolution the image pickup data of the subject to be traced, whose position is fetected in the previous Kth field, and stores it. After the termination of storage, the processing circuit 3 recognizes immediately the subject to be traced with the use of the data from the circuit 2b, and simultaneously detects the position of the subject to be traced with the use of the data from the circuit 2a. Thus the recognition and detection of the position of the subject to be traced can be continously executed, whereby unnecessary data is not fetched, and accelerated processing can be possible.
