PURPOSE:To improve the yield without by-product by using a catalyst containing a component possessing oxidizing ability, e.g. chromium oxide, present in a solid acid catalyst having an acid strength within a specific range in obtaining the titled compound by bringing acetic acid or propionic acid into contact with formaldehyde in the vapor phase. CONSTITUTION:Acetic acid or propionic acid is catalytically reacted with formaldehyde in the vapor phase, using a catalyst possessing an oxide of an element selected from V, Cr, Co, Ni, Mo, W and Pb and/or heteropoly-acid having one or two or more selected from V, W and Mo as a condensed coordination element as an oxidizing component on a solid catalyst having acid points of PKa <=-3.0 acid strength, preferably in the coexistence of oxygene to obtain the aimed compound. The molar ratio of acetic acid or propionic acid to formaldehyde to be fed is preferably 1:1-15:1. The reaction temperature is preferably within 200-500 deg.C range. |
