PURPOSE:A plant growth regulator, containing an N-acyllactam compound as an active constituent, capable of exhibiting effect on growth regulation of growth or dwarfing, etc., capable of being readily synthesized at a low cost and usable by a simple method without any limitation in application. CONSTITUTION:A plant growth regulator, containing an N-acyllactam compound expressed by the formula (R is -CH2-, -CH2-CH2- or -CH=CH-; n is 3-5), e.g. 1-(3-phenyl propanoyl)-2-piperidone, as an active constituent. The above- mentioned regulator is used in the form of a liquid or powder, or preferably liquid from the viewpoint of uniformity and the concentration thereof varies with the kind of the plant but is preferably about <=50mg/l for aiming at growth and >=500mg/l for aiming at dwarfing. The period of application is preferably the young seedling stage in general, but not limited thereto. For example. the compound expressed by the formula is synthesized from a lactam and an acid anhydride.
