PURPOSE:To form a magnetic layer having the improved degree of vertical orientation on a support by using platy magnetic powder having a prescribed average particle size and a prescribed plate ratio and a binder. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic layer contg. platy magnetic powder and a binder is formed on a support. The surface roughness R20 of the magnetic layer is <=0.08mum, preferably <=0.06mum. The magnetic powder is preferably hexagonal plate barium ferrite powder and has <=0.1mum, preferably 0.02-0.08mum average particle size and <=0.017mum, preferably 0.001-0.010mum average thickness so as to obtain satisfactory electromagnetic transducing characteristics. The plate ratio of the magnetic powder is >=6, preferably >=8. |
