An extended nip shoe for the paper-making machine cooperates with a roll to reduce friction and pressure at an in-running nip through which a paper web transport system runs. The system is lubricated as it enters the nip, pref. by an open reservoir of lubricant. An in- running nip surface is about 1.5 deg. from a tangent to the load arc of the nip, and forms a lubricant feed throat. An out-running nip surface at about 1.5 deg. from the load arc tangent provides gradual release of nip pressure from the transport system.
