Prodn. of human epidermal growth factor(Urogastrone) comprises multiplying appropriate human cells, then allowing them to release urogastrone. The cells can be (1) transplanted into a warm -blooded animal; (2) suspended in a device which provides the cells with nutrient fluid from such an animal, or (3) cultured in synthetic nutrient media. Hydridoma cells were obtd. by cellular fusion of human lymphoblast line(Namalwa, BALL-1 or JBL) with human cells capable of producing urogastrone, e.g. sub-maxillary gland tumor cells or lung or bladder carcinoma cells. Urogastrone has antisecretory and antiulcer activities and stimulates the growth of various tissues.
