A strand 1 is extracted from a continuous casting mould in a 'pilgrim- step' motion wherein the extraction- stroke has a length which is a multiple of 1 mm, while the retraction stroke has a length of a multiple of 0.1 mm, while the duration of each stroke is less than 1 second. Extraction apparatus further disclosed comprises clamping devices 9 supported on carriers 7 movable along guides 4 by piston and cylinder units 14.
