The invention relates to a protective covering (for example: covering giving protection against sun, rain, hail, snow and dirt) for motor vehicles - in particular motorhomes - and caravans. The protective covering comprises a tarpaulin which at least partially covers the vehicle and can be fitted around its sides with eyelets. The tarpaulin is spaced from the vehicle body by means of at least one inflatable body, which is equipped with an (air) fill-up valve, it being possible to use an inflatable body which can also be at least partially filled with drinking water and in addition to the fill-up valve has a (water) discharge valve. Preferably, there are located underneath the tarpaulin, transversely with respect to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, a plurality of roller-like inflatable bodies. The tarpaulin can additionally be stiffened by means of elongate transverse stiffening parts (for example: rods, tubes), which are fastened in or next to the inflatable bodies or just on the tarpaulin. Elongate longitudinal stiffening parts can be connected to the transverse stiffening parts. The tarpaulin can be fastened on the vehicle by means of adjustable ropes (or the like) and, by means of the inflatable bodies in a flexible manner.
