When boring through seams it is absolutely essential to stabilise the horizontal direction component, the drill bit being connected to a force-transmitting string of drill pipe which can be assembled from sections by means of non-rigid joints and can be provided with spirals on the outside. To improve the horizontal direction component, a stabilising device mounted independently of the rotation of the string of drill pipe 2 and consisting of stabilising rods 5, 6 parallel to the axis and carrying a stabilising mass 8 is provided inside the string of drill pipe 2 and at least over a sectional length of the same and also in such a way as to be partly connected to the drill bit 1 (Fig. 1). <IMAGE>
