The invention relates to an anti-skid system for motor vehicles, which is effective in snow and ice. The side-bar chain used has plastic or rubber bows, which bear spikes. The chain system is distinguished by a novel fitting technique. For this, the chain is laid on the road in front of the drive wheels. A special bow at the beginning of the chain ensures the connection between tyres and chain. When the vehicle makes contact, the chain automatically winds around the tyre. The end of the chain also has a special bow, which automatically latches into the beginning of the chain. Removal also takes place to a large extent automatically by means of a special bow. <IMAGE>
