To align paper or when using continuous forms, the paper guide tray (5) and the paper holding bar (27) need to be raised in typewriters, which in known arrangements is effected by separate operating levers. The invention is based on the object of providing a device on the platen for typewriters or similar office machines, which device allows simple raising of the paper guide tray (5) and the paper holding rod (28). In this case, secure functional positions are always to be guaranteed both in the typing position and in the paper release position. This object is achieved in that a paper release knob (19) is mounted pivotably on the free end (21) of a bearing spindle (3) of the roller platen (2), and in that the paper release knob (19) has a cam (18) for pivoting the paper guide tray (5) and a stop edge (31) for pivoting the paper holding bar (27). As a result, a cost-effective and easy-to-assemble control element is provided for raising the paper guide tray (5) and the paper holding bar (27). The two functional positions of the paper release knob (19) are always guaranteed in a secure manner. <IMAGE>
