In order to determine the direction ( phi ) and position (x/y) of rotation shafts (W1 to W4) moving in a translatory fashion, at least two rotation sensors (K1 to K4, S1 to S4) arranged on the shafts (W1 to W4) detect the phase angle thereof with the aid of assigned electronic counters (Z1, Z2). At the same time, they deliver information on the translation distance covered by the rotation shafts (W1 to W4). An electronic circuit (MC, A), in particular a microcomputer (MC) processes the weighted output signals of the counters (Z1, Z2) by carrying out steps of addition, subtraction and integration in such a way that the direction ( phi ) and position (x/y) of the shafts (W1 to W4) can be displayed. <IMAGE>
