In a suction device for liquids, a suction line 15 opens out into a container 1, while a centrally arranged, upright suction line 3 is guided through the bottom 2 of the container 1 to a suction assembly 30. In this case, a float valve 4, 7 assigned to the suction line 3 prevents direct inflow of liquid which has been taken up by overfilling the container 1. In order to be able to construct the float valve 7, 4 in a simple, functionally reliable and easy-to-clean manner, the suction line 3 is guided up inside the container 1 from below beyond the permissible liquid level 6. The float 7 constructed as a ring surrounds the suction line 3 which serves as a guide for the float 7. Seated on the upper end of the suction line 3 is a cap 4 with a suction aperture directed vertically downwards and lying radially adjacent to the suction line 3, the boundary walls of said suction aperture forming a valve seat 10 for the upwardly facing sealing surface 8 of the float 7.
