The invention relates to a method for checking optical backscattering measuring instruments (BSMI), in which optical signals having magnitudes that are predetermined and can be set at different values are fed into the optical output of the backscattering measuring instrument by means of an optical measuring transmitter and are compared with items of measurement information formed by an optical receiver of the BSMI. Reliable checking of the optical characteristics of the BSMI, in particular of the linearity and the range, becomes possible in a simple way due to the fact that the optical signals are input in the form of a function signal which continuously decreases from a predetermined maximum value in accordance with a prescribed temporal variation. <IMAGE>
