In a hydraulic self-advancing support system which is provided in a known manner with a gap cover, the safety and locking device according to the invention prevents the gap cover from being closed if an operator is located in the gap space between the adjacent support assemblies. The safety and locking device has a locking barrier (24) which is arranged at the support assemblies (2A, 2B), is located in the access to the gap space (13) and is automatically triggered if the operator enters the gap space, as a result of which a shut-off valve (22) is moved into the locking position, which shut-off valve (22) prevents pressure medium from being admitted to the thrust-piston mechanism allocated to the gap cover.
