For the exact determination of the mean pressure the measurement signal of the blood pressure curve is digitised, and the minimum is determined in a portion of the blood pressure curve which is longer than one breathing cycle. In the region of the minimum a window is then arranged which extends on either side of the minimum over at least one cardiac cycle. Inside the window, the maximum amplitude is determined and two threshold values at, respectively, 1/3 and 2/3 of the maximum amplitude are defined. Starting from the minimum a search is then made in both directions for the first amplitude which is higher than the higher threshold value, and starting from this amplitude a search is made for another amplitude which is smaller than the lower threshold value. Between the two successive amplitudes the respective maxima are determined and from the measured values between the two maxima the mean pressure is determined.
