So that, in hydrogen isotope separation employing various water phases moving in countercurrent through a heating and a cooling zone, a compact construction comprising relatively small operating units having horizontally disposable fractionating columns can be achieved, the water, bound to a solid adsorbent, is moved in countercurrent to a fluid phase of the water relatively to the heating zone and the cooling zone.
