This base for luminaires is suitable as an auxiliary unit for fully employing the illuminating power of table lamps of old and modern design. Particularly in the case of reading wide written works such as, e.g. opened-out illustrated magazines, it is found that the illuminating power of a table lamp frequently does not reach as far as the outermost edge of the more distant half of the magazine. Moving closer to the light source, particularly in the case of bulky illustrated magazines, often fails because the luminaire blocks the space. The invention provides a cavity (a hood) which is capable of accommodating wide written works or parts thereof and/or of further guiding them unfolded into an underpass (hood) - running frontally under the obstacle of the luminaire - so that in this way it is possible during reading for parts of a printed work which are remote from the light source to be pushed nearer to the light source. Possibilities for combination a) with the most varied models of table lamps, b) with tea lamps or other suitable household goods, c) with writing tables - connected permanently or detachably, d) as a cassette (advertising gift article for readership or publishing houses).
