PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound with simple procedure by an industrially advantageous method, by the asymmetric reduction of acetylpyridine with baker's yeast. CONSTITUTION:An acetylpyridine compound of formula (acetyl group is sub-stituted to 2-, 3- or 4-position) (e.g. 2-acetylpyridine) is treated with baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) at 24 deg.C for 24hr in the form of aqueous suspen sion to effect the asymmetric reduction of the compound. The objective com pound of formula II (1-hydroxyethyl group is substituted to 2-, 3- or 4-position) [e.g. S-(-)-1-(2-pyridyl)ethanol] can be separated by the chloroform extraction and silica gel chromatography of the reaction product.
