NEW MATERIAL:The carboxylic acid of formula I (X is Cl or CF3; Y is Cl or CH3; Z is <=4C bivalent aliphatic hydrocarbon group; R1 and R2 are H, hydroxy, lower alkoxy, lower alkyl or lower alkenyl), its alkali metal salt or alkaline earth metal salt. USE:A herbicide effective to kill or suppress the growth of broad-leaved weeds (e.g. weed of compositae family, Chenopodiaceae family, Polygonaceae family, Portulaceae family, etc.) and harmless to useful crops especially rice, corn, etc. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting the compound of formula II with the compound of formula III.
