PURPOSE:To correctly display the running amount of a tape even if the number of the rotation of a feeding reel or a take up reel of a magnetic tape is not detected by displaying the running amount of the magnetic tape by using a head change over signal. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic recorder is controlled by a microcomputer 1, the control is carried out by using a system control signal 10, and herein when an operation condition coincides with a recording operation, the microcomputer 1 permits the input of a head change over signal 2 to begin to count. At such a time, a count data set in a RAM is counted by the head change over signal 2 and updated every conversion and every updating per second. Then, the microcomputer 1 transfers the previously updated count data to the display device to display the running amount of the tape. A count data is not reset unless a counter rest signal 11 is inputted. The counter reset signal 11 is generated, either when a power source is closed, a magnetic tape is replaced or a reset switch is turned on.
