An indicator element (48) is movably mounted within a flow channel (34) and is structured to travel along with and in the directin of the passage of irrigating fluid (26) passing through the flow channel (34). A switching assembly is associated with the flow channel (34) and an indicator assembly for activation of the latter wherein a predetermined position of the indicator element (48) within the flow channel (34) is indicative of the establishment of peristaltic action of the intestine (10) being irrigated and of the intestine (10) receiving adequate irrigating fluid (26) to cause evacuation of the fecal matter contained therein. Activation of the indicator assembly informs the operator that sufficient fluid has entered the intestine (10) to cause the peristaltic action and evacuation so that fluid flow from a fluid supply to the intestine may be stopped.
