The invention relates to a display device in which a multiplicity of individually controllable pixels (BP) are arranged in rows and columns in a display surface (A). In order to achieve as simple as possible a design of the display unit using few modules, light-guiding channels (LLi) are provided arranged row-wise in a foil arrangement (F) and are optically coupled at the end face to a clock-controlled light source unit (LED); optical coupling-out points are constructed at the points of the pixels (BP) on the light-guiding channels in such a way that it is possible in each case for optical coupling-out points, arranged row-wise in each case, to be jointly controlled at the different light-guiding channels (LLi). The optical coupling points preferably consist of notches (K), arranged row-wise, in the light-guiding channels (LLi), in the region of which the total reflection can be locally cancelled for example by a sound pulse wave (W). <IMAGE>
