Melamine is prepd. by the thermal decomposition of urea. The decompsn. mixt. is cooled with an aq. medium to give an aq. prod. stream contg. melamine and by-prods. Melamine is sepd. from the aq. stream, and a small portion of the residual stream contg. by-prods. is treated to remove the by-prods. and is recycled. The treatment prevents the build-up of impurities and thus affords melamine of acceptable purity.
