A mouthpiece for holding apart the jaws of a patient for the introduction of a probe into the subject's lungs, gut or elsewhere is provided in which the mouth-guard comprises a plate 10 having an access aperture 14 which provides, with a guide tube 16 extending from the plate, a guide passage for the probe. The tube has a cap 18, with an opening 20, of a resilient material, which holds the probe in place. The mouthpiece has a bite piece, which comprises an upper, upwardly inclined wall 22 and a lower wall 24, joined by side walls 26. A tongue depresser 28 extend from the lower wall of the bite piece, inclined downwardly. Ventilation apertures 30 are provided in the mouth-guard. In a second aspect, the plate of the mouth-guard has an access aperture which is provided with means adapted to fit snugly around probe passing through the aperture, to restrain the probe from up and down or side to side movement. <IMAGE> |
