PURPOSE:To attain accurate and efficient character transmission by displaying a recovered text which is obtained by reading an external character of picture pattern corresponding to a location where external character display information of a received text is inserted from a memory and inserting the result. CONSTITUTION:When the reception of a text is finished, a control section 9 reads character information stored in a character storage section 71 in the order of reception so as to discriminate whether or not the information is an external character display symbol. When the information is not the external character display symbol, the information is outputted and displayed on a display section 8 as it is, and when the information is the external character display symbol, a corresponding external character pattern is read from a pattern storage section 72 in response to a number added to the external character display symbol, outputted to the display section 8, where the pattern is displayed. Since a received text is reproduced by replacing the external character picture pattern into a location where the external character display symbol in the text is inserted at the reception terminal device R, the terminal device R displays the external character as the font. Thus, the transmission efficiency of text is improved and an accurate reception text is obtained.
