PURPOSE:To read an original in a prescribed shape in a way used similarly for a conventional device and to cope with versatile originals with simple constitution by constituting a read unit possible for self-running, providing a sheet guide and fitting the unit to it. CONSTITUTION:A photoelectric converting element, an image forming means and a light source for lighting original are placed in a device frame 20 and they are constituted incorporatedly. A drive source 1 comprising a pulse motor or the like is fitted incorporatedly in the device frame 20 and the drive source 1 drives a carrying roller 11 fixed turnably to the device frame 20 via a timing pulley 17 and a timing belt 8. In driving the pulse motor 1, since the carrying roller 11 is driven, the read unit itself runs on an original 12. The read unit 20 is fitted to notches 26, 26' of the sheet guide 23 and steps 27, 27' constitutes it that the carrying rollers 11 is detached from the surface of a flat part 24 by the thickness of the paper 12.
