PURPOSE:To remarkably increase the green strength and resiliency of a rubber as compared when it is modified by two independent reactions as in a conventional process, by subjecting a rubber having unsaturated bonds of a -C(CH3)=C- type to a two-stage treatment comprising a modification reaction with a Lewis acid and a reaction for introducing carboxyl groups. CONSTITUTION:The modification of a rubber is performed by a two-stage treatment comprising a modification reaction with a Lewis acid and a reaction for introducing carboxyl groups. Said modification may be performed as follows. The modification reaction with a Lewis acid is first carried out in a state of a solution (especially in industry, a rubber cement after polymerization) and then the reaction for introducing carboxyl group is carried out. The order of these reactions may be reversed. Said Lewis acids may be common ones, especially SnCl4, BF3O(C2H5), SnBr4, etc., are preferable. The reaction for introducing carboxyl groups is performed by, for example, reacting a rubber with a hydroxamyl chloride such as terephthalhydroxyamyl chloride in a state of a solution in the presence of heat or a peroxide.
