ATTENUATION OF SOURCE-GENERATED NOISE IN A SEISMIC EXPLORATION SYSTEM ON A FLOATING ICE LAYER Disclosed is a method and apparatus for attenuating source-generated noise in a seismic exploration system on a floating ice layer to thereby enhance shallow reflection data. A plurality of seismic receivers are positioned in line and a seismic source system is offset relative to the seismic receivers. A man-made fracture is formed in the ice between the seismic receivers and the source system to substantially reduce the shear strength of the ice layer which reduces or eliminates the coherent, source-generated noise proprogated through the ice sheet, water and water bottom. The fracture may be formed by cutting, melting or otherwise causing the ice to part either completely therethrough or partially. In the preferred embodiment, the fracture extends on both sides of the seismic source.
|
