<p>PURPOSE:An organic hydroxyl compound is oxidized using a specific catalyst and an oxidizing agent to obtain a carbonyl compound which is used in produc tion of medicines, agricultural chemicals, perfumes and industrial chemicals such as solvent in high yield under mild reaction conditions. CONSTITUTION:The oxidation of an organic hydroxy compound such as phenethyl alcohol is carried out in the presence of a catalyst of Ru and/or a Ru compound such as Ruthenium trichloride hydrate, using a compound of the formula: M(XO3)n (M is alkali, alkaline earth metal; X is halogen; n is 1 or 2) such as sodium brmate as an oxidizing agent in an appropriate solvent such as chloroform, preferably adding a reaction promotor such as tricapryl methyl ammonium chloride and disodium orthophosphate for keeping the reaction mixture neutral or alkaline, at room temperature to the boiling point of the solvent for 10-20hr to give the objective compound such as acetophenone.</p> |
