摘要 PURPOSE:The titled novel strain capable of producing ethanol efficiently, by cultivating it in a medium containing xylan, starch, cellobiose, etc. CONSTITUTION:Novel strain Clostridium thermohydrosulfricum FRI-3(FERM-P 8150) is cultivated in a medium containing xylan, starch, inulin, cellobiose (cellulose hydrolyzate), etc. existing in a large amount as biomass components, to produce efficiently ethanol directly from them. The culture is carried out in the medium containing a nitrogen source, an inorganic ion, and an organic nutritive source besides these carbon source. Since carbon ion is not required, nitrogen may be used as a gaseous phase, and xylan, starch, etc. in an amount up to 5% can be added. Although yeast extract is not essential, addition of about 1-5g/l yeast extract makes ethanol formation rate high. The culture is carried out at 6.0-7.5pH at 40-73 deg.C under an anaerobic condition.
