PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful such as a raw material for aramid fibers in high purity and in high yield without containing any isomeric mixture, by condensing 3-nitrophenols with 4-chloronitrobenzene of specific purity, and reducing the resultant condensation product. CONSTITUTION:3-Nitrophenol or 3-aminophenol is condensed with 4- chloronitrobenzene, and the resultant product is reduced to obtain 3,4'- diaminodiphenyl ether, wherein the reaction is conducted by using the 4- chloronitrobenzene in high purity with <=0.1wt% 2-chloronitrobenzene content. According to the method, since there is no by-product of isomer in the condensation reaction, purification operation is simply performed with easy recovery and reuse of various solvents. Therefore, the process is simplified and economized to be suitable for industrial practice.
