PURPOSE:To enable the certain erasion of a character, by shifting not only the horizontal part or almost horizontal part of the parts constituting a printed character in an up-and-down direction but also the vertical part or almost vertical part of said parts in a left-and-right direction and tracing both shifted parts by an erasing pen. CONSTITUTION:For example, when a character to be printed is 'R', CPU160 reads the corresponding pattern data from a pattern memory 168 and applies driving control to a platen driving motor 18, a carriage driving motor 42 and a solenoid 79 corresponding to said pattern data and the character 'R' is printed by a printing pen. In the processing of an erasing mode, when a character to be erased is 'R', CPU160 reads the corresponding erasing pattern data from an erasing pattern memory 169. These erasing pattern data are points M1, M2,..., M12, N1, N2,..., N12 and these points come to data wherein the horizontal or almost horizontal parts of the character 'R' are slightly shifted to an up-and-down direction and data wherein the vertical or almost vertical parts are slightly shifted to a left and right direction and, therefore, said data are traced by an erasing pen.
