PURPOSE:To inexpensively and easily form the EC substance layer with a good productivity by coating the electrode with the mixture of the transition metal powders having the electrochromisum and the electroconductive powders and the binding agent followed by drying it to form the EC substance layer. CONSTITUTION:The EC substance layer 4 is formed on the display electrode 2 provided on a transparent insulating substrate 1 made of a glass. The EC substance layer 4 is the transition metal compd. having the electrochromisum such as the tangusten oxide. The EC substance layer 4 is prepared by coating the electrode 2 with the mixture of the transition metal compd. powders, the electroconductive powders and the binder in a prescribed ratio so as to be the prescribed pattern followed by drying it. The electrolyte 5 is enclosed between the EC substance layer 4 and the counter electrode 7 to form ECD. As the EC substance layer 4 is formed by coating the mixture followed by drying it, the titled element may be easily and inexpensively formed with the good productivity.
