PURPOSE:To make the liquid crystal layer thinner and to ensure a high speed responsiveness and to make a character display simple by forming a spacer with an optical trasmission film having an electric insulating property and by performing a character display on a part of the film. CONSTITUTION:The ferroelecrtricity chiral smectic liquid crystal 10 is enclosed between the orientation films 6, 7 and the sealing material 9. The spacer 8 defining a thickness of the liquid crystal cell 10 is the optical transmission film having the electric insulating property, and for example, composes of a photosensitive polyimide and has 1-3mum thickness. The titled device has <=3mum thickness of the liquid crystal cell 10 and ensures the high speed responsiveness making use of the ferroelecrtricity of the liquid crystal cell, thereby enabling to the excellent display quality. The cured film is formed by irradiating the light on an outer edge 13 of the spacer 8, thereby enabling to make the display of the character such as a production number and a product name, simple.
