PURPOSE:To obtain the titled element having a good stability and maintaining an operating life for long periods and also having a variety of the display color by using a specific polynuclear transition metal cyanide as the electrochromic substance. CONSTITUTION:The inorganic pigment made of the polynuclear transition metal cyanide shown by the formula wherein MA is Mn, Fe, Co, Cu or Ag: MB is Fe or Co, (k), (l) (x) are each 0 or an integer, is used, as the electrochromic (EC) substance. The EC substance layer 4 is formed by coating the transparent electrode 2 provided on the insulating substrate 1 made of the transparent glass with a coating liquor dispersed the electrochromic (EC) substance and the electroconductive powders in the solution of the binding resin followed by drying it. The counter substrate is formed by laminating a counter electrode 7, and an oxidation reduction substance layer 6 in order, on the insulating substrate 8. The substrate 8 is constructed with the substrate 1 in one body lying a spacer 3 between the substrates 1, 8, and the electrolyte 5 is enclosed therebetween, thereby enabling a multiple coloring display by selecting and combining the EC substances having different colorings.
