This invention relates to improved vectors and methods for making such vectors and for expressing cloned genes of eukaryotic orgin in prodaryotic hosts. DNA sequence with at least a portion coding for a polypeptide displaying foot and mouth disease virus(FMDV) antigenicity was selected from the following; (a) FMDV-715, 144, 1034, 1448, 1824, and 1933; (b) DNA sequences that hybridise to any of the foregoing DNA sequences; (c) DNA sequence from any source, including natural, synthetic or semi-synthetic sources, related by mutation to any of the sequences of codons coding for an antigenic polypeptide contg. an amino acid sequence similar to those coded for by codons of any of the foregoing DNA sequences.
