PURPOSE:To enable effective and accurate measurement of a target altitude, by positively utilizing changes in the amplitude of a received echo due o a multi-pulse interference. CONSTITUTION:The moving speed (v) of the same target is determined based on changes of a target distance R with time applied from a distance measuring device 7, at least three times t1, t2 and t3 at which the amplitude varying cycli cally of a received signal takes the maximum are determined based on a signal applied from a detector 6 and these times and measured distance values R(t1), R(t2) and R(t3) with the distance measuring device 7 at these times are memo rized. The values sampled are substituted into equations together with values of radar wavelength lambda and installation height h1 of the radar involved which are preset properly as constants to determine the target altitude h2(t1)at the time t1, the target altitude h2(t2) at the time t2 and the rate of change alpha per unit time in the respective target altitude as unknowns by solving simultaneous equations. Thereafter, the rate of change alpha thus obtained is used to obtain the target altitude at desired measuring time.
