The invention relates to an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer comprising at least one toroidal monochromator with a logarithmic spiral. This spectrometer comprises a source S sending X-radiation onto a sample 1 to be analysed, the latter then emitting X-rays, an input diaphragm 11, a monochromator 23 in the form of a body of revolution comprising single-crystal plates and shielding 21 disposed at its centre, an exit diaphragm 13 and an X-ray detector 5, the diaphragms 11, 13 and the monochromator 23 being centred on an axis 19 joining the sample 1 to the detector 5. A second monochromator 24, of the same type as the monochromator 23, may be placed between the source S and the sample 1 in order to monochromate the X-radiation emitted by the source S. The single-crystal plates of the monochromator 23, 24 are disposed so as to form a toroidal ring whose cross-section in an axial plane describes a logarithmic spiral. The invention applies in particular to metering certain elements in effluents, biological materials and polymers, it being possible for the samples to be liquid, solid or gaseous. <IMAGE>
