PURPOSE:A cured material of phenolic resin providing an improved lightweight porous material having improved heat resistance, chemical resistance, mechanical strength, etc., having specific extremely thin open cells. CONSTITUTION:A cured material of phenolic resin having open cells with <=10mum, usually 0.3-10mum average pore diameter. The open cells exist in a three-dimensional network state, and have 0.3-0.7g/cm<3> apparent density. The porous material is a film or plate. The cured material is produced by preparing a precondensate of a phenolic hydroxyl group-containing aromatic hydrocarbon compound ( phenol, cresol, etc.) and an aldehyde, making a uniform aqueous solution the precondensate and an inorganic salt (zinc chloride), curing it under heating while suppressing evaporation of water, and removing the inorganic salt.
