PURPOSE:To obtain a high-quality glass having excellent stability in high efficiency with broad tolerance of the setting of the smelting amount, by passing the glass raw material through a plurality of tin oxide electrode groups arranged vertically in a glass-smelting electric furnace, and then passing through a clarifying chamber. CONSTITUTION:The glass raw material is charged through the side hole at the top 2 of the glass-smelting electric furnace by a raw material feeder 1 uniformly to the surface 2 of molten glass in the furnace to form a glass raw material layer 5 floating on the molten glass 4 and covering the surface 10 in the furnace. The glass is roughly melted by the first- stage tin oxide electrode group 6 consisting of horizontally arranged cylindrical electrodes placed at the upper part of the furnace, and heated to the maximum temperature by the second-stage tin oxide electrode group 7 consisting of vertically arranged electrodes fixed at the bottom and placed in the middle part of the furnace to effect the defoaming of the gas generated by decomposition. The temperature of the glass is finally controlled by the third-stage tin oxide electrode group 8 arranged horizontally at the lower part of the furnace. The ratio of the electric current supplied to respective electrode groups are set to 2:4:1 from the top to the bottom. The molten glass is defoamed in the clarifying chamber placed between the lower end of the third electrode group 8 and the throat 9 and accounting for 80-100% of the maximum smelting volume. |
