PURPOSE:The clad of an optical fiber is coated with a primary silicon resin containing a large volume of foam on its outer surface to reduce the clad mode with scarece reduction in the tensile strength of the optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:The parent material 5 is taken up into an optical fiber 15. A primary silicone resin 31A containing a large volume of foam is prepared by mixing a silicone major material 21 with a silicone curing agent 22 and agitating the mixture in an agitation tank 24, then sent to the primary coater 7 having a dice 7A at its bottom. The optical fiber 15 is coated with the resin 31A containing a large amount of fine foam on the surface of the clad layer 2.
